Chocolate Experience in Wellington

Looking for a fun and genuinely Wellington experience? The Wellington Chocolate Factory offers hands-on chocolate-making experiences at our Eva St flagship store.

Our Original Chocolatier Experience is a 90-minute, hands-on chocolate-making experience at our Eva Street flagship store. You'll learn how chocolate is made from cocoa bean to bar, discover how we source our cocoa from Pacific growers, taste chocolate along the way, and make three chocolate bars of your own to take home.

It's part chocolate-making workshop, part chocolate tasting and part introduction to the world of bean-to-bar chocolate.

BOOK THE CHOCOLATIER EXPERIENCE

What happens during the Wellington Chocolate Experience?

We don't just tell you about chocolate. You get to make it.

Learn how chocolate is made

Your chocolatier will introduce you to the bean-to-bar process and explain how cocoa beans are transformed into chocolate.

You'll learn about the origins of cocoa, how we work with our Pacific grower partners and some of the processes involved in making good chocolate, including tempering.
Taste some chocolate

There'll be plenty of chocolate to taste along the way, because learning about chocolate is considerably more fun when you get to eat it.

Make your own chocolate bars

This is where you get to take over.

Choose a milk or dark chocolate base and select from a range of fun toppings to create your own flavour combinations. Your chocolatier will guide you through the process, but what goes into your bars is entirely up to you.

You'll make three chocolate bars, which you can take home once they're ready.

Enjoy a hot chocolate

Because one can never have too much chocolate, the experience also includes a Wellington Chocolate Factory hot chocolate.

What makes the Original Chocolatier Experience different?

You don't just stand and watch.

The experience gives you an introduction to how bean-to-bar chocolate is made, but the main event is making your own chocolate. You'll choose your flavours, create your bars and finish them ready to take home.

You'll also get an insight into how we make chocolate at Wellington Chocolate Factory, including our approach to sourcing cocoa directly from growers across the Pacific.

Why Wellington Chocolate Factory?

We're New Zealand's first craft bean-to-bar chocolate maker, and we've been based in Wellington since 2013. Starting in 2024 we've been committed to sourcing all our cocoa beans from growers in the Pacific.

That means the chocolate you work with is made using cocoa sourced through our relationships with Pacific growers and transformed into chocolate here in Wellington.

We care about where our cocoa comes from, how farmers are paid and how chocolate is made. We think that's worth knowing about, especially while you're eating it.

Who is the chocolate experience for?

The Original Chocolatier Experience is designed for people who want to get involved rather than simply watch.

It's a great Wellington activity for:

  • Visitors looking for something distinctly Wellington to do
  • Couples looking for a fun experience to share
  • Friends who would rather make something than just go for another drink
  • Families with older children and teenagers
  • Chocolate lovers who want to understand more about how chocolate is made
  • Locals looking for something different to do in the city
  • Small groups wanting a hands-on food experience

The experience is suitable for vegans. Please note that it is not suitable for children under 12. If you have a larger group, we offer discounted Group Experiences.

Is it a good rainy-day activity in Wellington?

Yes. Rain or shine we hold our courses.

While it's true that you can't beat Wellington on a good day, our little capital city does have a reputation for windy and rainy weather. The experience is indoors, so it's a great option when Wellington's weather isn't playing ball.
